This is a guest post by Anne Ogden. I worked with Anne in St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and she was a dedicated, compassionate counsellor to our palliative patients. She has since moved to Adelaide and now offers e-counselling.
Life changes. Relationships are complicated. And disasters happen. No wonder we get stuck. In the process, we try to make sense of what appears ‘senseless’. But it is hard. Often people turn to family and friends, which can be very helpful. But still we can end up going around in circles.
Nevertheless, when all else fails, professional counseling can be a very effective resource in order to gain a deeper understanding, and change the old patterns, or just deal with a crisis. Professional counselors are trained to offer support and build relationships that help you in a more objective, constructive and ethical way to move forward.
Counseling is about effective change and the enhancement of wellbeing. It can enable people to gain deeper understanding of their circumstances in order to deal with their lives in a creative, compassionate and life-giving way. In the long-term it can give psychological ‘toughness’ and resilience to face other issues.
Counselors journey with clients as they gain deeper understanding, encouraging them to make and claim their own insights and strengths. Counseling can help a client gain control on life and plan for the future, even if it is a very different future.
Technology has become an essential part of our lives. We use platforms such as Skype or Zoom to contact family or friends. Online counseling is one way for people who like this alternative method to face-to-face-sessions. It is convenient, safe and confidential. Some clients prefer to have telephone sessions.

This is an old video by Dan Chen (who is one of the pioneers in cancer immunotherapy and is now the chief medical officer for IGM Bioscience). It is a classic and particularly easy-to-understand for patients.
